FREETOWN, Sierra Leone — Legendary Sierra Leonean reggae and afrobeats artist Emmerson Bockarie has dropped a surprise 3-minute freestyle diss track that has sent the country's social media and WhatsApp groups into complete meltdown.
Released without advance notice at 11pm on Tuesday, the track — which has not been given an official title — appears to target three unnamed fellow artists in the Sierra Leone music industry, using pointed Krio lyrics that listeners have spent the night decoding.
500,000 WhatsApp forwards in 24 hours
By Wednesday morning, the track had reportedly been forwarded across WhatsApp more than 500,000 times, according to estimates from social media analysts tracking Sierra Leone content. The figure makes it one of the fastest-spreading pieces of audio content in Sierra Leone's history — surpassing even the viral "Krio Market Woman" voice note from 2024.
On Twitter/X, the hashtags #EmmersonFire and #SaloneGossip trended nationally throughout Wednesday, with fans and commentators debating the identities of the three artists referenced.
