FREETOWN, Sierra Leone β€” The National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) has relaunched its free rapid diagnostic testing (RDT) initiative across three major provincial districts, covering 45 government health facilities in Bo, Kenema, and Makeni.

The programme, funded by the Global Fund and the USAID President's Malaria Initiative, provides free same-day malaria testing to all patients presenting with fever or malaria symptoms, regardless of age or insurance status.

Which clinics are participating

All government health centres and Community Health Centres (CHCs) in the three districts are participating. This includes:

  • Bo District β€” Bo Government Hospital, 8 CHCs, 6 community health posts
  • Kenema District β€” Kenema Government Hospital, 7 CHCs, 5 community health posts
  • Bombali District (Makeni) β€” Magburaka Hospital, Makeni Regional Hospital, 9 CHCs

Testing is available during regular clinic hours: 8am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday. No appointment is needed β€” simply present at the outpatient department and state that you have fever or malaria symptoms.

What happens if you test positive

Patients who test positive using the rapid diagnostic test will receive:

  • A prescription for Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) β€” the WHO-recommended malaria treatment
  • Free medication if the facility's stock allows (some facilities may require purchase at the dispensary)
  • Follow-up advice and a net distribution voucher if no treated mosquito net is in the household
Warning signs requiring immediate care: High fever above 39Β°C, difficulty breathing, confusion or altered consciousness, inability to eat or drink, and repeated vomiting. These may indicate severe malaria β€” go to the nearest hospital emergency immediately.

Prevention reminder

The NMCP also reminded the public of the importance of sleeping under treated mosquito nets every night, eliminating standing water around homes, and seeking testing early rather than self-medicating with antimalarials without a confirmed diagnosis.
