NRA inspectors crack down on unlicensed businesses in Freetown CBD β 40 notices issued
FREETOWN, Sierra Leone β The National Revenue Authority (NRA) conducted a major compliance sweep through the Freetown Central Business District on Tuesday, issuing 40 formal compliance notices to businesses found operating without valid tax registration, trading licences, or both.
The sweep, which covered areas including Siaka Stevens Street, Lightfoot Boston Street, and Wallace Johnson Street, was carried out by a joint team of NRA inspectors and Freetown City Council enforcement officers.
What businesses were targeted
According to an NRA statement, the 40 notices were issued across the following categories:
- 18 notices β businesses with no NRA TIN registration
- 14 notices β businesses with expired or invalid trading licences from Freetown City Council
- 8 notices β businesses registered but not filing GST returns despite meeting the threshold
The NRA emphasized that the exercise was a compliance drive, not an enforcement seizure β businesses issued notices have 30 days to regularize their position before further action is taken.
How to register your business
Any business in Sierra Leone with annual turnover above NLe 50,000 is required to register with the NRA and obtain a Tax Identification Number (TIN). The process can be completed:
