FREETOWN, Sierra Leone β€” Tokeh Beach, located on the Western Area Peninsula approximately 30 kilometres south of Freetown, has been named the #1 eco-destination in West Africa for 2026 by Travel+Leisure Africa, the continent's leading travel publication.

The accolade, announced in the magazine's annual Africa Travel Awards issue, sees Tokeh beat 47 other shortlisted destinations across 16 West African countries, including Senegal's Saly Portudal, Ghana's Anomabo, and Nigeria's Tarkwa Bay.

Why Tokeh won

Travel+Leisure Africa's editorial team cited three key factors in Tokeh's selection:

  • Pristine natural environment β€” Tokeh's 2.5km white sand beach has remained largely free of the plastic pollution affecting many West African beaches, thanks to a community-led clean-up programme running since 2023
  • Marine biodiversity β€” The offshore waters host sea turtles, dolphins, and over 80 species of fish, making it one of the most biodiverse coastal areas in the sub-region
  • Authentic community experience β€” Unlike commercialised beach destinations, Tokeh remains a working fishing village where visitors can engage directly with local culture, cuisine, and craft
"Tokeh is not just a beautiful beach β€” it is a living ecosystem and a community that has chosen to protect its heritage. That combination is rare and precious anywhere in the world."
β€” Travel+Leisure Africa, Awards Editorial

How to get to Tokeh from Freetown

Tokeh is accessible by road from Freetown in approximately 45 minutes via the Peninsular Road. Poda-poda (shared minibus) services run from Murray Town terminal for approximately NLe 50–80. Private hire cars and motorbike taxis are also available. Boat trips from Aberdeen can be arranged through local operators.

The Sierra Leone Tourism and Cultural Affairs Board has confirmed that improved road signage and a new visitor information point will be installed at Tokeh by August 2026 in response to expected increases in tourism following the award.
